How to Unclog a Blocked Toilet (and When to Call a Plumber)

Most blocked toilets clear in a few minutes once you match the method to the problem. If the water rises and then drains slowly, a plunger or hot water with dish soap usually shifts it; if not, a hand auger reaches further down the bowl. Call a plumber once more than one drain backs up at the same time.

Key takeaways

  • What the toilet is doing tells you which fix to try, and whether the job is yours or a plumber’s.

  • A plunger, or hot water with dish soap, clears most blocked toilets in minutes.

  • If those fail, a hand auger (a toilet snake) reaches a clog further down the bowl.

  • When more than one drain backs up at once, the blockage is in the shared drain line, which is a plumber’s job.

Look before you reach for a tool

How a blocked toilet behaves tells you which fix will work, and whether it is a job for you or a plumber. A quick look at what happens when you flush points you to the right one. A toilet that fills then drains slowly has a soft clog near the bowl; one that barely moves has something firmer or further down; and if other drains gurgle when you flush, the blockage is not the toilet.

The two fixes that clear most blocked toilets

Most blocked toilets clear with one of two methods, both cheap.

1. Plunge first. A flanged plunger, with the soft lip that folds out to seal the outlet, works best. Keep enough water in the bowl to cover the rubber cup, seal it over the outlet, and push and pull steadily for ten to twenty pushes. Two or three rounds clear most everyday clogs.

2. No plunger? Use hot water and dish soap. Squeeze in plenty of dish soap, follow with a few litres of hot, not boiling, water, and wait fifteen to twenty minutes. The soap helps a soft clog slip free. Boiling water can crack the bowl, so avoid it.

If that does not work: a hand auger

If both fail, the clog is further down than they reach, and a hand auger is next. An auger, also called a toilet snake or งูเหล็ก, is a flexible cable you feed into the bowl and turn by hand to hook or break up the clog. A short one is cheap and reaches past the bend at the bottom of the bowl. Feed it in gently to the clog, then turn the handle to work through it. If the clog returns within a day or two, or the auger meets something solid, stop. That is where a plumber saves you money rather than costs it.

What about caustic soda?

Many Thai guides suggest pouring caustic soda (โซดาไฟ) into a blocked toilet, and opinions are genuinely split. For a toilet specifically, it is usually not the best first choice. Caustic soda dissolves grease and hair, so it can help a slow kitchen sink, but it does not break down the toilet paper, wipes, or objects that usually block a toilet, so it often leaves the clog in place. It is also corrosive and gives off fumes, which is worth respecting in a full bowl you may then need to plunge (Sanook). For most toilet clogs a plunger and an auger are simpler and lower in risk, which is what many plumbers suggest (Bob Vila). If you do use it, follow the safety instructions on the pack; if the clog will not move, an auger or a plumber is more reliable.

When it is a plumber’s job

Some blockages are not the toilet’s fault. If more than one drain backs up at once, or water rises in the shower when you flush, the blockage is in the shared line every drain empties into. Home tools cannot reach it. Stop running water, since a blocked shared line can push waste water back into the house, and call a plumber.

Keep it from happening again

Most blocked toilets come down to what goes in. Only waste and toilet paper break down safely; tissues, wipes labelled flushable, sanitary products, and cotton buds do not, and they cause most stubborn clogs. A bin within reach of the toilet makes those easy to throw away instead of flushing them. If your pipes are old or drain slowly, an occasional flush of hot water keeps things moving.
