The cost depends on where the leak is and how much refrigerant is needed. A leak in the coil may mean replacing it — the technician will agree the price with you before starting.

Compressor not working: repair or replace?

A compressor that won't run hasn't always failed. Sometimes the cause is a capacitor, a relay or the power supply, which costs much less to fix. The technician finds the cause first. If the compressor really does need replacing, the price depends on the brand, BTU size and refrigerant type. For an older aircon, compare the repair cost with the price of a new unit before deciding.

1. Check the problem — the technician runs the aircon to check cooling, noise and dripping, then checks refrigerant pressure or the electrics as needed.

2. Find the cause and agree the price — they explain what's wrong, what needs replacing and what it costs, before starting.

3. Repair — they replace parts, fix leaks or add refrigerant as agreed.

4. Test with you — they run the aircon so you can see it's cooling properly, not dripping and not making strange noises.

Common aircon problems

• Not cooling — could be dirt, low or leaking refrigerant, or a compressor that won't run. If there's only weak airflow or a musty smell, try a clean first.

• Dripping water — usually a blocked drain pipe or a dirty coil.

• Noisy — usually the fan, the compressor or a loose part.

• Freezing up — air isn't flowing through the coil properly, or refrigerant is low. Switch it off and have a technician check it.

• Shuts off by itself or won't turn on — often a sensor, capacitor, control board or the power supply.
